| 31.01.2010 | Erling has been lucky to get two of his images of a very rare sea slug displayed on the world known web page Sea Slug Forum. There are very few images of this sea slug and Erlings images brings new knowledge to how this tiny little creature lives and behave in its natural environment. Erling recalls how the images was captured: The image was captured in Paradice Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula. We dived down a steep wall of rocks which was full of marine life and I recognized Crustacean in many shapes and sizes. On 15 metres depth I spotted this sea slug and I captured a few images of it before I kept on with my dive. I did not know then that this little nudibranch was a very rare type. The water temperature was only 1 centigrade below the freezing point. The water was very clear and we could se the glacier hanging on the rock wall far above the water. Take a look at this rare sea slug and read about I on Sea Slug Forum. |

| 09.12.2006 | A mysterious gelatinous ball has puzzled and fascinated researchers after undersea photographer Erling Svensen spotted it while diving at the mouth of the Matre fjord in Hordaland, western Norway. It was 50-70 centimeters (19.5-27.5 inches) in diameter and looked like a huge beach ball. It was transparent but had a kind of thick, red cord in the middle. It was a bit science-fiction," Svensen told newspaper Bergens Tidende's web site. Take a look at the image here. And read what Norwegians largest newspaper, Aftenposten, writes about the case here. |
| 28.11.2006 | During a diving trip in the Trondheimsfjord in September, I discovered this beautiful digging anemone during a night dive. It vas spotted on sandy bottom 6 metres below the surface in the strait Skarnsundet. I did understand that this was something special, but I did not know then, that this anemone never was registered in Norway. The anemone can grow to a length of 30 cm and have a diameter of 2,5 cm. It has 12 long arms which are very flexible. The centre disk is typical yellow/white and the arms have unique patterns. The anemone can quickly disappear into the sand when it becomes disturbed. Take a look at the images here. Erling Svensen |

| 12.05.2006 | Erling has been diving in Chile for 3 months now. Here is a story about his trip and the link to some images he captured. Most of the diving was done in the fjords and South in Patagonia. Chile could be compared to Norway, regarding the diving, but when you start studying the biology, you will find great differences. The kelp and the cold water makes you feel at home, but it was quite easy to find new creatures to photograph. Never before had I brought my memory card to the surface loaded with so many new species, and never before had I captured more than 200 images on one single dive. To identify the animals was a different task. Very few of the animals which inhabit these waters, have been documented and gathered in a reference book. This made it very difficult to find the names of each single animal. Some of the animals have not been given a name, and it seems like they never will get one. The literature is just too bad, so there is a big job to do for marine biologists. The diving surprised me concerning the low number of different fishes that I saw. Two of the species occurred in a large number. One of these was one quite similar to our Norway Haddock. Total Chile has more than 1200 different species of fish, but to see them during a dive was very difficult. The fjord-diving was as simple as it is in Norway, and surprising. As Norway, Chile have narrow, deep fjords that makes it easy for deepwater life to ascend to diving depths. In the Comau fjord the solitaire cup-coral can be seen at only 10 meters dept, much shallower than it normally lives. And we captured big basket-stars in some localities very, very shallow. The fjords also inhabit big colonies of sea lions, and to see them under water was a new and very funny experience. Down at the southernmost part of South America, in the Strait of Magellan, only 50 kilometres from the most southern mainland, we dived in the big kelp forest. Here some of the fishes have “freezing liquid” in their blood, as the water temperature may fall below the freezing point of water. Prof. Bjoern Gulliksen – who I helped in his field work – was very happy when we saw the world longest ascidians colony. It may grow up to 7 meter long. The pictures that you now can take a look at, are all given a name, at least a family name. At my PC, I have pictures of many species not given any name. Bjoern is still working in Chile with the pictures, trying to classify them. In the future, more pictures may be added. Take a look at Erlings images here. |
