Caroline Weir is a
marine mammal scientist based in Aberdeen in the UK. Her
work involves freelance consultancy to a range of
conservation bodies, research organisations and industry,
and in recent years has included extensive fieldwork in
Scotland, the Gulf of Mexico and along the west coast of
Africa. Caroline has a BSc in Ecology and a MSc in Marine
Mammal Science, and is currently planning to commence a PhD
on white-beaked dolphins in the North Sea during 2006.
Caroline began
photographing cetaceans and other marine wildlife in 1995,
and upgraded to her first digital SLR at the beginning of
2005. In addition to being a much-enjoyed hobby, her
photography of marine mammals is invaluable as a research
tool for identifying individual animals (based on
pigmentation, scarring and cuts) and providing scientific
information such as population size, home range, animal
associations, migration routes etc. Caroline has also used
her cetacean photography to validate species identification
in scientific papers. More about her work can be found at
